If told it was only a drizzle we would have ordered vegetables as a side. What I received were 2 lamb chops so overcooked that they were crunchie. I would have sent them back but not a waitress was to be found. My wife was waiting for me to eat and her food was getting cold so I eventually just ate them.
The lentils served with them were very good. Also when my wife wasn't around I stopped a busboy and asked him to let our waitress know too. I gave her a present and card when we first sat down, which were on our table the whole meal. Obvious to others that it was her birthday. Not once did the waitress acknowledge it was her birthday. I was so sure they wouldn't even put a candle in her desert that I suggested we go elsewhere for desert and my wife agreed.
I would like to go back and tour the castle and maybe get a drink at the bar, but never for a meal. Date of stay: November Seattle, Washington 39 contributions 76 helpful votes. Overall a pleasant stay. The rooms are nice and clean. Good for a special occasion. You won't find all the amenities of most modern hotels here.
Ex: there is no pool or spa or fitness room and the room has no coffee maker, ice bucket or fridge. Parking is valet only but free.
The mattress seemed dated and worn. But the rooms were large and clean. The food is average, perhaps overpriced. The rooms can get noisy with all the events happening, particularly on weekends so it's a good idea to bring earplugs. Date of stay: October Rooms. Oheka Castle was a wonderful find for a 4 day visit this past August It was such a unique experience versus the typical hotel chain experience. It's has a great history and charm and it seemed like we were in a European country in one of it's castles. The owner is a gracious, warm and welcoming man who made us feel very comfortable here. The location is very good in mid-north shore location of Long Island.
Not too far to the great beaches on South shore. We hope to go back next year. We actually went during Hurriance Henri and thankfully Henri wasn't quite as bad as they had predicted, at least not on the north shores of LI. We spent the day at the castle and it was a pretty good place to be!

In , financier and philanthropist Otto Hermann Kahn built Oheka Castle Oheka being an acronym for his own name in the middle of a acre plot on the highest point on Long Island. During the Golden Age of the s, Kahn, his wife Addie and their four children used the ,square-foot, room estate as a summer home where he would host lavish affairs and entertained royalty, heads of state and Hollywood stars.
When Kahn died in , Oheka changed hands several times, having served as a retreat for New York sanitation workers as well as a government training school for Merchant Marine radio operators. In , the Eastern Military Academy purchased Oheka, eliminating the beautiful gardens, subdivided the rooms and painted over the walls. Thirty years later, the school went bankrupt and was left abandoned, open to arsonous vandalism.
Fortunately, developer Gary Melius purchased Oheka in as well as the remaining 23 acres that surrounded the estate. At the time, it was considered the largest private residential renovation project in the country.
It was then that Oheka began the painstaking process of restoration to its original castle grandeur. That meant using slate roof tiles sourced from the same Vermont quarry where Kahn had purchased the originals, replacing more than windows and doors with custom-made duplicates and handcrafting the wrought-iron railing on the Grand Staircase, which took two months to be refinished.
The formal gardens were recreated using original drawings from The Olmsted Brothers, resurrecting the eight reflecting pools and three fountains. The library is a highlight of the grand home.
